NEW Ron Block Instructional DVD
Banjo students everywhere are buzzing about this latest offering from Acutab, Ron Block: A Fresh Look at Bluegrass Banjo. Block, who has gained notoriety from his career (now in its 18th year) with Alison Krauss and Union Station, gives us almost four hours of instruction on two DVDs, and there is no doubt you’ll get more than your money’s worth.
What you get is a vast amount of knowledge and wisdom as Ron talks about how he learned to play the banjo, his influences, and the learning tools that he has utilized on his journey thus far. One of his techniques, that has fascinated and inspired students of the banjo, is the guitar-like choking and string bending he does to voice notes as he plays. Ron clearly explains how he uses this technique to get the full potential out of his banjo. Additionally, Ron demonstrates various ways to work with a drum machine to better develop your timing, and also includes how you can put to use certain guitar techniques . which has influenced his banjo playing.
Most of the songs Ron includes in his instruction are classics that AKUS fans have come to love. They include, Tiny Broken Heart, Cluck Old Hen, Remember You Love in My Prayers, Everytime You Say Goodbye, My Poor Old Heart, Bright Sunny South, Man of Constant Sorrow, and Smashville. Despite all the technique, licks, and songs you can learn from this DVD, Block has a very clear, and important message for the listener/viewer, and that is to learn from the ideas behind what he does. To quote him more directly, he encourages us to learn from “the ideas behind what I do.” Plain and simple truth, is it not? He also says not to make it your central focus to learn his style note-for-note. Instead, use the material on this DVD to inspire your own self to create your own style and voice.
